description La utilización de zirconia como material en rehabilitación oral ha ido en incremento en los últimos tiempos debido a que cuenta con excelentes propiedades mecánicas; como una alta resistencia a la flexión y a la fractura y excelentes propiedades ópticas especialmente en la zirconia de última generación, lo que va de la mano con las exigencias estéticas por parte de los pacientes reusándose a la utilización de materiales metálicos por la carente estética. Dicho material ha ido evolucionando presentando hasta la actualidad tres generaciones estudiadas por diversos autores, presentando cada una condiciones y características necesarias para el éxito del tratamiento, así como ventajas y desventajas frente a otros materiales utilizados en prótesis fija, es por ello que es necesidad del operador conocer el tipo de zirconia que debe utilizar en cada caso clínico, para así poder alcanzar el éxito del tratamiento. Se realizó una revisión de la literatura actual de no más de 5 años sobre cada generación de zirconia, mostrando en cada una de ellas las características necesarias que debe presentar para el buen desempeño del material evitando así las fallas más frecuentes reportadas por diversos autores y de ésta forma poder determinar qué generación de zirconia es la apropiada para cada situación clínica. Así también se enfatiza en un correcto protocolo de procesamiento y cementación basada en un análisis de los resultados reportados por diversos estudios.
