description La presente investigación se orienta a reconocer la importancia de la valoración y uso social del Complejo Arqueológico Chan Chan, por parte de los habitantes del centro poblado Villa del Mar ubicado en el entorno urbano inmediato del sitio patrimonial, con relación a los principales aspectos de su desarrollo sostenible. Investigación de tipo descriptiva transversal con muestreo no probabilístico. Los resultados indican que la falta de conocimiento del grado de significancia, asociaciones y niveles de apropiación por parte de la comunidad hacia el complejo arqueológico, generan una clara desvinculación entre los objetivos sociales y las acciones, proyectos y/o programas ejecutados en Chan Chan. Asimismo el uso social está orientado básicamente a programas educativos y de atención al visitante, desconociendo la participación comunitaria como factor clave en la gestión del sitio y su entorno. Ambos factores limitan las posibilidades de efectivizar impactos positivos en el desarrollo sostenible del centro poblado.

Transversal descriptive research with non-probability sampling. The results indicate that the lack of knowledge of the degree of significance and appropriation that gives the community, generates actions, projects or programs implemented in Chan Chan clearly disassociated to social objectives. Also, the social use is basically oriented to educational and touristic programs, not recognized the community participation as a key factor in the management of the site and its surroundings.
