Se conformaron tres grupos de acuerdo a la posición del maxilar según el Elemento II, 20 con retrusión, 30 normales y 30 con protrusión. Se evaluó la autopercepción estética del perfil facial en sonrisa a cada sujeto mediante la escala visual análoga, valorada de 0 a 10, donde 0 indicaba menor atractivo y 10 el máximo atractivo que puedan considerar. Se tomó una fotografía de perfil facial en sonrisa a cada sujeto seleccionado. Cada fotografía fue mostrada al mismo sujeto para que vuelva a valorar su atractivo facial. La valoración de la autopercepción también fue evaluada antes de visualizar su fotografía. Los resultados mostraron que no se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre las calificaciones de autopercepción según posición del maxilar (p>0.05). Se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el total de la muestra entre las valoraciones antes y después de ver la fotografía (p<0.05). Se concluye que no existen diferencias entre la autopercepción estética del perfil facial en sonrisa en sujetos con diferente posición del maxilar. Los sujetos fueron más críticos respecto su propio tractivo antes de ver su fotografía.

A prospective, cross-sectional, comparative and observational study was designed; with a sample of 80 subjects between 16 and 29 years of age (average: 20.75 +/- 2.80), 25 men (range: 17 to 27 years, average: 20.80 +/- 2.74) and 55 women (range: 16 a 29 years old: average: 20.73 +/- 2.74). Three groups were formed according to the position of the maxilla in relation to Element II, 20 with retrusion, 30 normal and 30 with protrusion. The aesthetic self-perception of the facial profile in smile was evaluated for each subject by means of the analog visual scale, valued from 0 to 10, where 0 indicated less attractive and 10 the maximum attractiveness that they could consider. A picture of a smiling facial profile was taken of each selected subject. Each photograph was shown to the same subject so that he re- evaluated his facial profile. The assessment of self-perception was also evaluated before visualizing his photograph. The results showed that no statistically significant differences were found between the self- perception ratings according to maxillary position (p>0.05). Statistically significant differences were found between the evaluations before and after viewing the photograph (p<0.05). It is concluded that there are no differences between the aesthetic self-perception of the facial profile in the smile in subjects with different position of the maxilla.
