Transformations of cumbia on the north coast of Peru in the first two decades of the XXI century

Cumbia has gone through different transformations on the Peruvian north coast and much has been written about its historical aspects and its social impact. For a better understanding, it is necessary to address the musical phenomenon itself. Therefore, the objective of this research was to identify the influences and characteristics of cumbia in this region, through comparative analysis and the research paradigm on the arts of three representative musical pieces of this musical genre, performed by the Agua Marina, Grupo 5, and Armonía 10 groups. The research design consisted of the application of interviews, the transcription of the recordings, and the comparative musical analysis. The results showed that the harmony of the pieces, eminently tonal, was chordal with few tensions and neighbor tones. The themes are oriented towards melancholy, disappointment, love, or a story. Some groups exclusively use virtual and electronic instruments, while others use metal winds with a treatment inherited from salsa. These results show that cumbia from the north coast of Peru has a strong influence from Colombian and Caribbean genres. Patterns referring to the lambada and compound meter were also found, as in the case of the emerging genre called merequetengue.
