| Sumario: | Objective: To analyze the association between blood glucose (BG) at admission and severe sepsis during hospitalization in non-diabetic patients admitted for infection. Material and method: An analytical, retrospective and cross-sectional study using clinical records of 140 non-diabetic patients admitted for infection to Hospital Regional Docente de Truijllo. BG was recorded on admission, divided by quartiles of the data obtained, and if they developed severe sepsis during hospitalization, also were registered: age, sex, place of infection, creatinine level and hospitalization time. The Gamma statistic was used to evaluate the association between main variables. Results: Mean BG=110.79 ± 25.4 mg/dL, yielding four working groups (G), according to quartiles: 92.75, 103 and 127 mg/dL. There were no significant differences between age, sex, place of infection, creatinine level and time of hospitalization. Nine patients (6%) developed severe sepsis, 5 of them G2. NAC was the most frequent infection among those who developed severe sepsis and cellulitis among those who did not. Gamma Statistic=0.134, p=0.488 (95% CI). Conclusions: There is a weak positive non-statistically significant association between blood glucose at hospital admission and severe sepsis during hospitalization in non-diabetic patients admitted for infection |
