This is how sugarcrete, a novel sustainable material derived from sugarcane bagasse, proves to be an eco-friendly option that utilizes household waste from agroindustry to eliminate the need for high-pollution conventional construction materials, such as concrete. In Piura, one of Peru's most important regions for sugarcane production, large quantities of bagasse are generated, a waste that often ends up discarded or burned, negatively impacting the environment. Therefore, using this material as briquettes would not only reduce landfills; it would also contribute to the carbon footprint, since it would also reduce the gases emitted by its decomposition and reduce those produced by its burning. Furthermore, the use of sugarcrete will contribute to the circular economy by creating jobs in the collection, processing, and application of the material, which will strengthen social and economic sustainability. All of the above is part of a broader vision of sustainable materials, locally designed and compared with other ecological options and their use in urban planning, to enable energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of construction in the area.
