Sumario:The global trade in ornamental fish carries significant risk factors for the spread of pathogens globally, not only for ornamental fish, but also for farmed fish. In this work, we report the ability of Aeromonas veronii and Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from ornamental fish to experimentally infect Colossoma macropomum, and their primary characterization was also carried out. For the determination of the LD50, fish were inoculated with 0.1 mL of increasing concentrations of A. hydrophila or A. veronii corresponding to tubes 5 to 9 of the McFarland standards (C1 = 1 × 102; C2 = 1.8 × 104 ; C3 = 2.1 × 106 ; C4 = 2.4 × 108 bacterial cells per ml) in the coelomic cavity. In the control group, fish received the same volume of sterile saline solution (0.65%). The fish presented petechiae, suffusions on the skin and high mortality rates of up to 100%. Histopathologically, the fish presented necrosis with karyolysis, loss of cytoplasmic delimitation of the cells of the renal tubules, hemorrhage and the presence of bacterial colonies. The LD50-96h of A. veronii in C. macropomum was estimated at 24 x 106 CFU mL−1, with its lower and upper limits at 0.7965 × 106 and 73.38 × 106 CFU mL−1, while for A. hydrophila was estimated at 1.408 × 105 CFU mL−1 and with its lower and upper limits at 0.4905 × 105 and 4.041 × 105 CFU mL−1, respectively. The results demonstrated that Aeromonas species isolated from ornamental fish affect C. macropomum causing similar clinical signs and lesions. This demonstrates the importance of promoting risk control measures in the ornamental fish trade to prevent the spread of diseases and economic losses.
