Maestría en EntomologíaEl orden Mallophaga comprende un grupo de ectoparásitos obligatorios de aves y mamíferos que en nuestro país, en el pasado, no recibió la debida importancia, limitándose los estudios mayormente a especies que afectan animales domésticos. En conjunto, hasta 1970, se consignan en la literatura nacional 32 registros de MALLOPHAGA colectados en siete especies de mamíferos domésticos y siete especies de aves, tres domésticas y cuatro silvestres. En el presente trabajo, cuya finalidad es la de ampliar el conocimiento de las especies de MALLOPHAGA que parasitan aves de la costa y sierra centrales del Perú, se han registrado 80 especies de MALLOPHAGA comprendidas en dos sub-órdenes, tres familias y 56 géneros, parasitando 51 especies de aves, las cuales están comprendidas en 15 órdenes, 26 familias y 36 géneros. La presentación de las especies incluye claves de identificación para sub-órdenes, familias y géneros; caracterización de los géneros; registros de sinonimia, preferencia de hospederos y material colectado para géneros y especies. Las especies son ilustradas con fotografías. El estudio se complementa con capítulos generales sobre morfología, biología y hábitos, antecedentes sobre su taxonomía en el Perú y extranjero y criterios usados en la clasificación del orden, además de un capítulo sobre métodos de colección, preservación y montaje. Como parte final se considera una lista del material identificado acompañado de sus hospedadores, y en otra los hospedadores con sus parásitos. Los registros extraídos de la literatura peruana son revisadas y su nomenclatura es actualizada, siendo presentados en una lista. En ella se consignan 22 especies válidas de MALLOPHAGAThe order Mallophaga (actually recognized as a suborder in the order Phthiraptera) comprises a group of insects which act as obligatory ectoparasites on birds and mammals which, in Peru, did not received an appropiate attention; most of the studies were on those species found on domestic animals. Until 1970 the peruvian literature show 32 registers of MALLOPHAGA collected on seven species of domestic mammals and seven species of birds: three of them domestic and four wild ones. This work has the purpose to increase the knowledge of this group, by collecting them on several species of birds, mostly wild, comming from the central coast and highland of Peru. It resulted in the identification of 80 species of MALLOPHAGA belonging in two sub-orders, three families and 56 genera, found on 51 species of birds, belonging to 15 orders, 26 families and 36 genera. The insect species were included in identification keys for sub-orders, families and genera; the description of genera, their taxonomic synonymy, their preference to parazitize certain bird species, and a description of the collected material for genera and species. The especies were illustrated with photographs. The study was complemented with general chapters on their morphology, biology and behaviour, previous studies in Peru and abroad, and the criteria used for the classification of the order, with a chapter on the techniques for the collection, preservation and mounting of the specimens. The final section comprises lists of the identified material with their hosts, and a list of the hosts with their parasites.
