Maestría en Producción AnimalEl presente estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar si existen diferencias significativas entre las características fenotípicas actuales del ovino criollo en distintas zonas de la Sierra del Perú. La metodología utilizada fue la medición de las siguientes características físicas cuantitativas: Altura de cruz y grupa, longitud corporal, cabeza, grupa y oreja, perímetro torácico, anchos de cabeza y grupa, así como el peso corporal. Se trabajó con una muestra de 219 animales en total, provenientes de los poblados de Olleros (Ancash), Secclla (Huancavelica) y Umachiri (Puno). Se realizó dos diseños estadísticos: el primero para determinar el efecto de la edad y la localidad en hembras de las tres regiones y el segundo para determinar el efecto del sexo, la edad y localidad en dos regiones. Con los datos obtenidos se determinaron 9 índices zoométricos los que sirvieron para clasificar a estos ejemplares en función de su utilidad para la producción de carne. Los resultados obtenidos indican que las variables biométricas del ovino criollo hembra sí están influenciadas por la zona donde se ubican, siendo de mayor tamaño las hembras provenientes de la Región de Puno, hembras de tamaño intermedio las de Ancash y hembras más pequeñas las de Huancavelica; por otro lado, si hubo un dimorfismo sexual marcado para los ovinos de las regiones de Ancash y Puno teniendo de las 10 variables 7 mayores en machos. Por medio de las correlaciones y coeficientes de variación se observó que estas muestras de ovinos carecían de selección, presentaban alta variabilidad entre medidas y poseían pocas variables biométricas fijadas. Las hembras de la Región Puno presentaron tendencia a la producción de carne con medias de 40.02 y 40.93 para los índices pelviano transversal y longitudinal respectivamente. Solo los ovinos machos de la Región Puno presentaron grado medio de armonía del modelo morfológico (51.11 por ciento), ya que presentaron 23 correlaciones positivas y significativas.The aim of the present study was to determine whether there are significant differences between the current phenotypic characteristics of Creole sheep from different areas of the Peruvian highlands. The followed methodology was based on the measurement of the following physical quantitative characteristics: wither and rump height, body, head, rump and ear length, thorax perimeter, widths of head and rump, as well as body weight. The sample consisted of 219 animals from the towns of Olleros (Ancash), Secclla (Huancavelica) and Umachiri (Puno). Two statistical designs were made: the first to determine the effect of age and environment in females of the three regions and the second to determine the effect of sex, age, and environment in two regions. From the data obtained 9 zoometric indexes were calculated in order to identify the suitability of the sheep for meat production. The results reveal that significant differences do exist in biometric variables between creole sheep female from different localities, with bigger animals coming from the Puno Region while animals of intermediate and small sizes come from the Ancash and Huancavelica regions; on the other hand, there was a marked sexual dimorphism for sheep in the regions of Ancash and Puno taking of the 10 variables 7 largest in males. Correlations and coefficients of variation revealed also the samples of sheep were not the result of a selection process; showed high variability between measurements and had few fixed biometrics variables. The females from Puno Region tended to be suitable for meat production with means 40.02 and 40.93 for transverse and longitudinal pelvic indices respectively.
