Recientes innovaciones tecnológicas, como las semillas de maíz amarillo duro (MAD) genéticamente modificadas resistentes al gusano cogollero (Spodoptera frugiperda) con material genético de Bacillus thuringiensis, el MAD Bt, podrían mejorar el rendimiento por hectárea de este cultivo en la zona de estudio. Así, la investigación tiene como objetivo general evaluar ex – ante los impactos económicos, a corto y largo plazo, de liberar semillas de MADBt en la costa norte peruana, para apoyar la toma de decisiones respecto a su liberación en el Perú, aunque ahora hay moratoria para esta tecnología. Para la evaluación de corto plazo, se utilizó el modelo de presupuesto parcial y el índice de beneficio-costo marginal; mientras que, a largo plazo, se empleó el modelo de cambios de excedentes económicos, para estimar los incrementos en bienestar de la comunidad. Se encontró que las semillas de maíz Bt generarían impactos económicos positivos: incrementos en el margen de utilidad a corto plazo de 91.59% por hectárea, y un índice de beneficio-costo de 1.07; con una probabilidad de 93.8% de escenarios exitosos por la nueva tecnología en maíz amarillo duro. A largo plazo los excedentes de los consumidores se incrementarían en S/ 115 millones, el de los productores en S/ 225 millones; y a nivel gubernamental, el proyecto presentaría un VAN esperado mayor a S/ 355 millones, lo que pone de manifiesto la rentabilidad a largo plazo de la inversión. Se recomienda realizar investigaciones semejantes para otros cultivos.The production of hard yellow corn, important in Peru and on the Peruvian north coast, has been reduced in the northern regions, mainly due to the climate and pests that affect the crop and the profitability of the producers. Recent technological innovations, such as genetically modified hard yellow maize (MAD) seeds resistant to the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) with genetic material from Bacillus thuringiensis, the MAD Bt, could improve the yield per hectare of this crop in the study area. Thus, the research has the general objective of evaluating ex-ante the economic impacts, in the short and long term, of releasing MADBt seeds on the Peruvian north coast, to support decision-making regarding their release in Peru, although there is now moratorium for this technology. For the short-term evaluation, the partial budget model and the marginal benefit-cost index were used; while, in the long term, the economic surplus changes model was used to estimate the increases in community well-being. Bt corn seeds were found to generate positive economic impacts: short-term profit margin increases of 91.59% per hectare, and a cost-benefit ratio of 1.07; with a probability of 93.8% of successful scenarios due to the new technology in hard yellow corn. In the long term, consumer surplus would increase by S/ 115 million, producer surplus by S/ 225 million; and at the government level, the project would present an expected NPV greater than S/ 355 million, which shows the long-term profitability of the investment.
