The perspective adopted in this Note is that as an indicator it maintains its importance and validity and what is required is to develop new economic metrics so as not to exhaust ourselves on the issue of growth, which is a way in which we understand insufficiently the economic development.

Como ninguno, expresa en cifras, muchas dimensiones y tiene un papel muy importante en la toma de decisiones en materia económica. Esta nota académica, y otras que le seguirán, intentará explicar en términos asequibles cómo se obtiene, qué representa y cómo debe interpretarse el PBI. La perspectiva que se adopta en esta nota es que, como indicador, mantiene su importancia y vigencia, y lo que se requiere es desarrollar nuevas métricas económicas para no agotarnos en el tema del crecimiento, que es una manera en que se puede entender, de modo insuficiente, el desenvolvimiento económico. En esta Nota, se explica n las tres formas en que se mide el PBI, pero no se aborda el tema de la variación de precios y, por tanto, la medida del crecimiento, que es una variable longitudinal, es decir, que incorpora la dimensión temporal. Asimismo, se explica cómo surgió este indicador en la escena internacional y nacional, y se plantean varios temas que deben ser tratados de modo diferenciado, como son la informalidad y las economías criminales, la sostenibilidad ambiental de la producción, o la distribución del ingreso.spaPontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.
