The first is Camata Tambo, located at approximately 3000 masl in the upper Moquegua Valley, in the ecological zone known as the chaupi yunga. The second is Tacahuay Tambo, located approximately two km inland and 25 km south of the mouth of the Ilo River, in the yunga zone (See Figure 8.1). These Inka installations are among the few sites that have storage facilities in the Moquegua Val ley (Bürgi 1993; Van Buren et al. 1993); however, Ca mata Tambo has the largest storage facility in the Colesuyo region. In this article, we adopt inter- and intra-regional perspectives to analyze the variables affecting the structural characteristics of these two tambos. We focus on the storage facilities at these sites as reflections of the political economy strategies used by the Inka empire in different ecological zones of Colesuyo. At the same time, we take into account local and regional historical and political contexts that structured Inka presence in the region, interregional cultural contact, and the response of local elites to the empire.En este artículo discutimos los sistemas de almacenamiento de dos tambos o posadas de alojamiento inkas ubicados en el Colesuyo. El primero es Camata Tambo, ubicado aproximadamente a 3000 msnm en la zona alta del Valle de Moquegua, en una zona geográfica conocida como la chaupi yunga. El segundo es Tacahuay Tambo, localizado aproximadamente a dos km de la línea costera y a 25 km al sur de la desembocadura del Río Ilo, en una zona conocida como la yunga (ver Figura 8.1). Estas instalaciones inkas son unas de las pocas que muestran evidencias de sistemas de almacenamiento en el Valle de Moquegua (Bürgi 1993; Van Buren et al. 1993); por otro lado, el sistema de almacenamiento de Camata Tambo es el más grande de la región del Colesuyo. En este artículo se analiza desde una perspectiva inter e intraregional las posibles variables que afectaron a las características estructurales de estos dos tambos . Por ello, nos enfocamos en los sistemas de almacenamiento de estas instituciones que estarían reflejando la estrategia política económica utilizada por el imperio incaico en diferentes zonas ecológicas del Colesuyo.
