A partir del análisis bibliográfico sobre las tendencias del nivel del mar y los estudios sobre las variaciones de la línea de costa, se ha identificado que solamente el 15% de las playas del país retroceden por erosión. En la mayoría de los casos, la erosión se debe a la alteración del balance de sedimentos causado por la presencia de estructuras costeras de protección. Por otra parte, el 85% de la línea de costa se mantiene estable o avanza hacia el mar.
