Si bien se conoce que la esperanza es esencial para la adaptación y recuperación de los adolescentes con enfermedades crónicas, la mayor parte de los estudios orientados a comprender su rol en la adherencia al tratamiento se ha realizado en poblaciones de adultos, por lo cual a través de la presente revisión sistemática se buscó describir y explicar el rol de la esperanza en la adherencia al tratamiento en pacientes oncológicos adolescentes, respondiendo así a los vacíos de conocimiento actuales. Se utilizó la fórmula “hope OR hopefulness” AND “cancer OR tumor OR neoplasm” AND “adolescent OR teen OR teengaer OR youth” introducida en SCOPUS y Pubmed, seleccionando finalmente 10 artículos (7 cuantitativos y 3 cualitativos) e identificando 5 roles los cuales fueron: la esperanza como factor motivacional, 2) la esperanza y su influencia en el proceso de evaluación y toma de decisiones con respecto al tratamiento, 3) la esperanza fomenta el afrontamiento positivo, 4) la esperanza y su “efecto amortiguador” frente a la sintomatología ansiosa y depresiva y 5) la esperanza como predictora de variables que contribuyen en la adherencia al tratamiento.

Therefore, this systematic review sought to describe and explain the role of hope in treatment adherence among adolescent oncology patients, addressing current knowledge gaps.
