I will rely on the fourth and fifth editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to evaluate the figure of Captain Paiva, the main character of the tradition «Al pie de la letra». In this text, I will analyse the evolution of mental health studies at that time on the basis of his case and explain the differences between autism spectrum disorder and Asperger’s syndrome. Finally, it will briefly comment on the situation of people with Asperger’s during the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru.  El objetivo principal de este artículo es identificar las dificultades y las oportunidades que podría enfrentar un adulto con el síndrome de Asperger en el siglo xix. Me apoyaré en las ediciones cuarta y quinta del Manual diagnóstico y estadístico de los trastornos mentales para evaluar la figura del capitán Paiva, personaje principal de la tradición «Al pie de la letra» y, a partir de su caso, analizaré la evolución en los estudios de la salud mental en esa época, explicaré las diferencias entre el trastorno del espectro autista y el síndrome de Asperger, y comentaré brevemente la situación de las personas con Asperger durante la pandemia de la COVID-19 en el Perú.
