We will observe that since the 16th century, sexually transmitted diseases have spread, which are predominantly spread by carnal contact and even by saliva. The causes and consequences of this disease on health will also be explained. Finally, the promotion of sexual health and prevention of syphilis, as well as its treatment, will be discussed.En este artículo se analizará la tradición «Las orejas del alcalde», de Ricardo Palma, desde el punto de vista médico, ya que una de las características más resaltantes del personaje conocido como Diego de Esquivel, alcalde mayor, es que es un hombre mujeriego y sin una relación estable. Observaremos que desde el siglo XVI se propagaban las enfermedades de transmisión sexual, las cuales se contagian predominantemente por contacto carnal e incluso por la saliva. Asimismo, se dará a conocer las causas y consecuencias de esta enfermedad en la salud.
