This space endowedwith political symbolisms of great significance to Franco’s dictatorship, although the monumental sculptures experienced many upheavals and singular cases. Historical identities usedto be understood as a permanent background, where it is always possible to find prominentfigures in order to give form to the different narratives. Este artículo reflexiona sobre la creación de escultura monumental en capitales de provincia españolas durante las décadas de 1950 y 1960 y el papel que desempeñan sobre lasdimensiones de la memoria colectiva de esas ciudades.La primera parte del artículo se centra en analizar las relaciones entre arte, memoria histórica e identidad nacional, incidiendo en el contexto español. En la segunda parte se analizan algunos de estos espacios que están cargados de simbolismos políticos de gransignificación para la dictadura de Franco, aunque estas esculturas monumentales experimentaron diversas vicisitudes y casos singulares. En estos casos las diferentes identidades históricas se entendieron como un repertorio permanente del que siempre es posible extraer personajes con objeto de dar forma a diferentes narrativas.
