We will also analyze the properties of quina in the field of medicine from the time of viceregal Peru, when it was used for the different pathologies of the time, to the present day. We are interested in highlighting the importance of disseminating information about the quina tree to preserve it from agricultural activities that are carried out in an indiscriminate and unconscious manner, and which cause the quina tree to be at risk of near extinction.En el presente artículo se expondrán los resultados de las investigaciones sobre las causas y consecuencias de la casi extinción del árbol de la quina por la actividad agrícola, con base en la relevancia de este árbol que quedó registrada en la tradición «Los polvos de la condesa», de Ricardo Palma. También se analizarán las propiedades de la quina en el ámbito de la medicina desde la época del Perú virreinal, en la que eran utilizadas para las diferentes patologías propias de la época, hasta la actualidad.
