En las tradiciones «Pepe Bandos» y «Cortar el revesino», de Ricardo Palma, se narra la aparición de la fiebre amarilla en las costas peruanas durante el siglo xviii, así como la infección que, a causa de esta enfermedad vírica, padeció el duque de la Palata al llegar a Panamá. En este artículo se analizarán ambos textos; el objetivo es exponer el origen de esta epidemia, desarrollar una revisión histórica sobre ella y el impacto que ocasionó en el Perú.
