Desde la implantación de las colonias en América, la imagen negra ha sido rechazada y convertida en algo antiestético. Esta connotación negativa de la condición negra ha afectado la forma en que las personas negras se perciben a sí mismas. Esto puede comprobarse en la novela Sab (1841) de Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, donde el protagonista fue influenciado por este sistema y se vio a sí mismo como un esclavo. En este trabajo se reflexiona sobre dicha autopercepción.
