In Lima street children first appeared in the twentieth century as a consequence of the processes of urbanization and modernization. The author describes in detail the recent history of childhood life on the streets of Lima including aspects of welfare work. Final/y he describes the real life of street children in the historical centre of Lima at the md of the eighties based on field research using modern sociological methods.El autor emprende un recorrido histórico sobre los niños de la calle limeños. Destaca que la antigua cultura colonial urbana de Lima no permitía que tal fenómeno social se articulara y desarrollara en siglos pasados, como ocurrió en otras ciudades latinoamericanas como Sao Paulo (Brasil) y Bogotá (Colombia). En la capital peruana, los niños de la calle aparecieron en el siglo XX como consecuencia de los procesos de urbanización y modernización. El autor describe detalladamente la historia reciente de la infancia callejera limeña, incluyendo aspectos de la asistencia a la misma.
