And, on the flip side, narrow views, thankfully overcome, that attach absolute priority to maintaining social policies based on direct and indirect transferences hand-outs that undermine macroeconomic stability, are giving way to a more balanced outlook. Now, more than ever, it is vital that national and international policy agendas have an integrated vision of the social and economic dimensions of development. Based on a number of studies, this article looks closely at the impediments and challenges that recent discussions of these issues have brought to light.Las urgencias para lograr un mayor crecimiento económico en el corto plazo han oscurecido la gravitación que tienen las políticas sociales para la sostenibilidad de dicho crecimiento en el largo plazo. E, inversamente, enfoques estrechos, afortunadamente superados, que atribuían una prioridad absoluta al sostenimiento de políticas sociales basadas en transferencias fiscales directas e indirectas, con menoscabo de la estabilidad macroeconómica, están dejando paso a una perspectiva más balanceada. Tanto en las agendas de las políticas públicas nacionales como en las internacionales es ahora más visible la necesidad de una visión integrada de las dimensiones sociales y económicas del desarrollo.
