It is suggested that the economy problems experienced in the 80's were caused by three main factors: the external shock, the stagnation of the export sector and the instability and lack of coherence of the economic policity adopted.El artículo presenta la evolución de la coyuntura en los años 1980-1989, período caracterizado por marcados cambios en la política económica. Se analizan las orientaciones económicas básicas de los regímenes de Belaúnde y García, así como sus consecuencias fundamentales.
