This article analyzes the relationship between these two factors in a protected space in Mexico. The objective of the study was to uncover the factors that promote governance and how they influence social sustainability. Six elements that enable the development of Cabo Pulmo were identified. The fieldwork consisted of in-depth interviews with residents. The information gathered allowed the theory to be compared with the empirical results. It was determined that the social cohesion that exists in Cabo Pulmo creates a path for improving the population’s standard of living, because decisions are taken jointly and include the protection of natural resources.La literatura vinculada al estudio de la sustentabilidad social y la gobernanza se focaliza en el quehacer de las comunidades rurales para alcanzarla. Este artículo versa sobre la relación que existe entre ambas en una comunidad al interior de un Área Natural Protegida (ANP) en el estado de Baja California Sur. Por tanto, el objetivo primordial es revelar los factores que impulsan la gobernanza y cómo estos influyen en el proceso vinculado a la sustentabilidad social. Para lo anterior, se elaboró un modelo teórico que vincula ambos términos a fin de identificar los seis elementos que permiten el desenvolvimiento de la comunidad de Cabo Pulmo. El trabajo de campo constó de entrevistas a profundidad a la población residente, esta información sirvió para descubrir y contrastar lo teórico con lo empírico, en donde se logra determinar que en Cabo Pulmo existe una cohesión social que permite establecer el camino para mejorar las condiciones de vida de los lugareños, ya que la toma de decisiones es conjunta y siempre contemplando la protección de los recursos naturales del espacio protegido.Universidad del Pacífico2020-07-22info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdftext/htmlapplication/pdfhttps://revistas.up.edu.pe/index.php/apuntes/article/view/105610.21678/apuntes.87.1056Apuntes.
