Objectives: To determine the need to develop ES for learning basic ophthalmology and to design and develop the educational software. Methods: An operational research study was conducted in three stages: needs assessment, design, and development of the ES. A bibliographic search was conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and LILACS databases, and the ophthalmology curricula for medical students from four Peruvian universities were reviewed. Following this, the design method was explained and justified. Results: It was found that, worldwide, there are limited and isolated experiences with ES related to ophthalmology teaching, and no reported experiences in Peru. The time allocated for learning ophthalmology in the curricula averaged two theoretical class sessions, three clinical practice sessions, and one laboratory session. The ES was well justified and detailed, based on its thematic content and presentation format. Conclusions: The need for the designed ES with ophthalmology content for undergraduate medical education was identified. The development of ophthalmology ES aimed at medical students is essential as a didactic educational support resource.

Objetivos: Determinar la necesidad de desarrollar un SE para el aprendizaje de Oftalmología Básica y elaborar un diseño y desarrollo del Software Educativo. Material y métodos: Investigación operativa que comprendió tres etapas: diagnóstico de necesidades, diseño y desarrollo del SE. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en las bases de datos MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus y LILACS y se revisaron los programas de estudio de oftalmología dirigidos a estudiantes de medicina de cuatro universidades peruanas. Tras esto, se explicó y justificó el método usado para su diseño. Resultados: Se encontró que globalmente, existen experiencias limitadas y aisladas de SE relacionados con la enseñanza de oftalmología, y ningún reporte de experiencia en el Perú. El tiempo asignado para el aprendizaje de oftalmología en los planes curriculares fue, en promedio, de dos sesiones de clases teóricas, tres sesiones de prácticas clínicas y una sesión de laboratorio. Se obtuvo el SE debidamente justificado y detallado a partir de su diseño en su contenido temático y su forma de presentación. Conclusiones: Se identificó la necesidad del SE diseñado con contenido de oftalmología para el pregrado de medicina.
