This tragic event, like a war, required the intervention of the Peruvian Armed Forces through a military operation to rescue the survivors, remove debris and rebuild affected populations. The objective of this research is to describe the intervention of the peruvian military in non-war or political events, but in actions to help the population affected by the natural disaster. For this, military sources have basically been used, the same ones that provide important information but that almost always go unnoticed among the existing investigations on the subject.La tarde del 31 de mayo de 1970, un terremoto y alud desapareció la ciudad de Yungay, en Ancash. Este trágico suceso, al igual que una guerra, exigió la intervención de las Fuerzas Armadas del Perú a través de una operación militar para el rescate de los sobrevivientes, la remoción de escombros y la reconstrucción de las poblaciones afectadas. Esta investigación tiene por objetivo describir la intervención de los militares peruanos en acontecimientos no bélicos ni políticos, sino más bien en acciones de auxilio a la población afectada por los fenómenos de origen natural.
