MATERIAL AND METHOD: 201 formalin fixed, paraffin embedded lung tissue sections corresponding to 87 adenocarcinomas, 88 squamous cell carcinomas, 15 large-cell carcinomas, and 11 small-cell carcinomas were retrospectively studied. We have used the labeled streptavidin biotin immunohistochemical method with antibody DO-7, and a microwave pretreatment to recover the antigens. RESULTS: The global frequency of p53 accumulation was 59,7% and the frequency regarding to tumor type was 63,2%, 55,7%, 73,3%, and 45,4%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The protein p53 inversely correlated with the degree of tumor differentiation, but there is no correlation between p53 and patients’ gender neither age.OBJETIVOS: Determinar la frecuencia de acumulación de la proteína p53 en biopsias de pacientes con cáncer pulmonar y encontrar su correlación con la edad y sexo del paciente, y el grado de diferenciación del tumor. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se estudió retrospectivamente 201 biopsias pulmonares fijadas en formol e incluidas en parafina, las cuales correspondieron a 87 adenocarcinomas, 88 carcinomas epidermoides, 15 carcinomas de células grandes y 11 carcinomas de células pequeñas. Se empleo el método inmunohistoquímico estreptavidina-biotina-peroxidasa con el anticuerpo DO-7 y un pretratamiento con microondas para recuperar los antígenos. RESULTADOS: La frecuencia global de acumulación de p53 fue 59,7% y por tipo de tumor 63,2%, 55,7%, 73,3%, y 45,4%, respectivamente.
