Completed his medical training, he returned to Peru and began researching local issues; his doctoral thesis at the University of San Marcos is on the basal metabolism of the Peruvian Indian, that extends past work studying the effect of hypoxic environment on it.La labor científica del profesor Alberto Hurtado empieza en 1925, siendo residente en el Hospital Boston City, donde trabaja al lado de Francis Peabody, demostrando sincera devoción por la investigación clínica, lo que determina el aprecio de sus colegas y maestros, quienes le invitan a quedarse con ellos en la famosa Universidad de Harvard.
