The history of cytology, in our view, is closely related to the emergence of two great creations, the microscope and the definition of cell.Leopold Koss, en la 3ª edición de su obra "Diagnostic Cytology and its Histopathologic Bases" señala que la citología es "el arte y la ciencia de la interpretación de las células del cuerpo humano, sean de descamación exfoliadas de las superficies epiteliales o bien obtenidas de los diferentes tejidos por procedimientos diversos" (1).
