The waters of the Rímac River are mainly contaminated by residues from the mining-metallurgical industry, domestic waste from the centers located on its banks, industrial and agricultural waste. Likewise, the growing requirement for drinking water to supply the population of Lima and Callao, for agriculture and energy generation, makes it necessary to carry out studies on the quality of water and its effects on hydrobiological resources and human health.El conocimiento del medio acuático, así como las principales fuentes de contaminación, su transporte, su transferencia y bioacumulación son necesarios para una evaluación adecuada del grado de contaminación de las aguas del río Rímac y sus efectos en los recursos hidrobiológicos y en la salud humana. Las aguas del río Rímac se encuentran contaminadas principalmente por residuos de la industria minero-metalúrgica, desechos domésticos de los centros ubicados en su orilla, desechos industriales y agrícolas.
