Semiotic categories have been employed to explain the mechanisms of irony and the importance of the body in Caviedes’ poetry. The proposed explanation is divided into two points: firstly, it argues that the poetic self employs irony and polyphony to critique medical practices; and secondly, it emphasizes the significance of the body in Caviedes’ poetry. The article concludes that the body is the radical condition of signification in Caviedes’ poetry. Se analizan dos poemas de Juan del Valle y Caviedes, poeta que desarrolló su actividad en el siglo xvii. Caviedes se caracterizó por el uso de la ironía para criticar las prácticas médicas de su tiempo y por ser el iniciador de la poesía criolla en el Perú. Se han utilizado categorías de semiótica para explicar los mecanismos de la ironía y la importancia del cuerpo en la poesía de Caviedes. La explicación propuesta se divide en dos puntos: en primer lugar, se argumenta que el yo poético utiliza la ironía y la polifonía para criticar las prácticas médicas. Y, en segundo lugar, se remarca la importancia del cuerpo en la poesía de Caviedes. El artículo concluye que el cuerpo es la condición radical de la significación en la poesía de Caviedes.
