One of them, which following the development of quantum mechanics is intended to be reduced to physics, is chemistry, especially afterPaul Dirac stated that chemistry is a type of physics with highly complex mathematical equations. For chemists, understanding the structure of a chemical compound or molecule is fundamental. The molecular structure is the spatial representation of the chemical elements that make up that molecule. However, quantum mechanics cannot account for its structure, because in the quantum realm the concept of molecular structure would be nothing more than a “powerful and illuminating metaphor” with no real referent. In this article, two theses are developed, the first, that chemical structures are plausible, and the second that there is a level of chemical reality that microphysics or quantum mechanics has no possibility of either predicting or explaining.En este artículo, se presenta cómo en la filosofía de la ciencia se ha tomado como modelo de ciencia a la física lo que ha ocasionado que, dentro de la filosofía de la ciencia, todas las demás ciencias pretendan ser reducidas epistemológica y ontológicamente a la física. Una de ellas, que a raíz del desarrollo de la mecánica cuática se pretende reducir a la física, es la química sobre todo luego que Paul Dirac afirmara que la química es un tipo de física con ecuaciones matemáticas altamente complejas. Para los químicos entender la estructura de un compuesto o molécula química es fundamental. La estructura molecular es la representación espacial de los elementos químicos que forman dicha molécula. Sin embargo, la mecánica cuántica no puede dar cuenta de su estructura, pues en el ámbito cuántico el concepto de estructura molecular no sería más que una “poderosa e iluminadora metáfora” sin referente real.
