It was found that the critical literacy approach should be considered in order to foster responsible participation and social transformation since it allows students to have a toolbox to confront social inequities. Furthermore, educational proposals have been put forward to take the theory to the praxis. Lastly, it is essential to bear in mind this information so as to prepare students for the challenges in the 21st century and provide education for social change.El presente texto analiza la relación entre la literacidad crítica y la formación ciudadana. Se plantea como objetivo describir la conceptualización teórica encontrada sobre el rol de la literacidad crítica en la formación ciudadana. Se evidenció que para tener una educación que incentive la participación responsable y transformación social, se debe considerar al enfoque de la literacidad crítica en las escuelas, pues permite que los estudiantes tengan herramientas para hacerle frente a las desigualdades sociales. Asimismo, se dieron a conocer propuestas pedagógicas para llevar este enfoque de la teoría a la práctica.
