description The objective of this study is to evaluate the frequency of gastrointestinal parasites in free-living marsupials received at the Veterinary Clinics Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Fecal samples from nine white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1841) and three thick-tailed opossums (Lutreolina crassicaudataDesmarest, 1804) were processed by the Willis and Lutz methods. Both species of marsupials presented nematode eggs and/or protozoan oocysts in their feces. In white-eared opossums, eggs of Ancylostoma spp. Ercolani, 1859 and Capillaria spp. Zeder, 1800 (4/8 - 50%), Ancylostoma spp. and Cruzia tentaculata (Rudolphi, 1819) Travassos, 1917 (2/8 - 25%), C. tentaculata (2/8 - 25%) and oocysts of Eimeria spp. Schneider, 1875 (1/8 - 12.5%) were identified. The only hatchling presented eggs of Ancylostoma spp., Trichuris spp. Roederer, 1761 and Rhopalia coronatus Stiles and Hassall, 1898. The three opossums presented eggs of Ancylostoma spp. (3/3 - 100%) and two also presented oocysts of Eimeria spp. (2/3 - 66.7%). All animals were dewormed and parasitological tests were repeated until negative results. Parasitological diagnosis is a protocol upon admission so that the response to treatment of the underlying pathology occurs without interference from parasitic diseases.

Se procesaron muestras fecales de nueve zarigüeyas de orejas blancas (Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1841) y tres zarigüeyas de cola gruesa (Lutreolina crassicaudata Desmarest, 1804) mediante los métodos Willis y Lutz. Ambas especies de marsupiales presentaron huevos de nematodos y/o ooquistes de protozoos en sus heces. Huevos de Ancylostoma spp. Ercolani, 1859 fueron identificados en zarigüeyas de orejas blancas y Capillaria spp. Zeder, 1800 (4/8 - 50%), Ancylostoma spp. y Cruzia tentaculata (Rudolphi, 1819) Travassos, 1917 (2/8 - 25%), C. tentaculata (2/8 - 25%) y ooquistes de Eimeria spp. Schneider, 1875 (1/8 - 12,5%). El único polluelo presentó huevos de Ancylostoma spp., Trichuris spp. Roederer, 1761 y Rhopalia coronatus Stiles y Hassall, 1898. Las tres zarigüeyas presentaron huevos de Ancylostoma spp. (3/3 - 100%) y dos también presentaron ooquistes de Eimeria spp. (2/3 - 66,7%). Todos los animales fueron desparasitados y se repitieron las pruebas parasitológicas hastas obtener resultados negativos. El diagnóstico parasitológico es un protocolo durante la hospitalización para que la respuesta al tratamiento de la patología de base se produzca sin interferencia de enfermedades parasitarias.O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a frequência de parasitos gastrointestinais de marsupiais de vida livre recebidos no Hospital de Clínicas Veterinárias da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, região sul do Brasil. Amostras fecais de nove gambás-de-orelha-branca (Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1841) e três cuícas-da-cauda-grossa (Lutreolina crassicaudata Desmarest, 1804) foram processadas pelos métodos de Willis e de Lutz. Ambas espécies de marsupiais apresentaram ovos de nematódeos e/ou oocistos de protozoários nas fezes. Nos gambás de-orelha-branca foram identificados ovos de Ancylostoma spp. Ercolani, 1859 e Capillaria spp. Zeder, 1800 (4/8 - 50%), Ancylostoma spp. e Cruzia tentaculata (Rudolphi, 1819) Travassos, 1917 (2/8 - 25%), C. tentaculata (2/8 - 25%) e oocistos de Eimeria spp. Schneider, 1875 (1/8 - 12,5%). O único filhote apresentou ovos de Ancylostoma spp., Trichuris spp. Roederer, 1761 eRhopalia coronatus Stiles e Hassall, 1898. As três cuícas apresentaram ovos de Ancylostoma spp. (3/3 - 100%) e duas apresentaram também oocistos de Eimeria spp. (2/3 - 66,7%). Todos os animais foram desverminados e exames parasitológicos foram repetidos até a negativação.
