Sampling was carried out between June and July 2023, during low tide, through linear transects parallel to the coast, arranged in two strata (lower and upper). Samples were collected with a shovel 25 cm wide and 20 cm long, sieved with a 1 mm mesh. In each sample, the number of P. columellaris individuals was counted and their lengths (shell length, LH in Spanish) were recorded using a millimetric paper. Population density was highly variable, with significant differences between transects and an average of 11 ind./500 cm2. Population densities were similar between strata. Size frequency distributions of P. columellaris showed two main modes for the total data (5.71 mm LH and 9.91 mm LH), lower (6.44 mm LH and 9.79 mm LH) and upper strata (5.40 mm LH and 9.94 mm LH). The modes showed that small individuals (< 8 mm LH) preferred the upper strata and large individuals (< 8 mm LH) preferred the lower strata. Population densities of P. columellaris are highly variable due to population changes associated with tidal dynamics. Comparisons between studies should be made with caution due to methodological differences.

Sowerby I, 1825) es una especie de caracol, abundante en la zona intermareal de las playas arenosas. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar su densidad poblacional y distribución de frecuencia de tallas en la playa comprendida entre Punta Blanca-Punta Prieta, Provincia de Manabí, Ecuador. El muestreo se realizó entre junio y julio 2023, durante la bajamar, a través de transectos lineales paralelos a la costa, dispuestos en dos estratos (inferior y superior). Las muestras fueron recolectadas utilizando una pala de 25 cm de ancho y 20 cm de largo, tamizadas con un cedazo de 1 mm de luz de maya. En cada muestra se contó el número de individuos de P. columellaris y se registraron las tallas (longitud de la heliconcha, LH) mediante una hoja milimétrica. La densidad poblacional fue muy variable, con diferencias significativas entre transectos y un promedio de 11 ind./500 cm2. La densidad poblacional fue similar entre estratos. Las distribuciones de frecuencia de tallas de P. columellaris presentaron dos modas principales, para el total de los datos (5,71 y 9,91 mm LH), estrato inferior (6,44 y 9,79 mm LH) y superior (5,40 y 9,94 mm LH). Las modas mostraron que, los individuos pequeños (< 8 mm LH) prefirieron el estrato superior y los grandes (< 8 mm LH) el superior. La densidad poblacional de P. columellaris es altamente variable debido a cambios poblacionales relacionados con la dinámica de mareas.
