description The objective of the research was to compare the levels of emotional intelligence in a sample of institutionalized and non-institutionalized children and adolescents in Quito, Ecuador. The research adopts a comparative, cross-sectional quantitative approach using the Emotional Quotient Inventory EQi-YV BarOn. Sixty children and adolescents participated (56% female, 44% male) aged 7 to 17 years (M=11 years; SD= 3.18), where 30 of them belong to a foster home and the rest to a private institution in the city of Quito, Ecuador. Significant differences are found, as institutionalized children and adolescents have lower and average levels of emotional intelligence compared to those not under institutional care, the majority of whom have higher levels of emotional intelligence. In conclusion, the emotional lessons learned during childhood and adolescence become critical windows of opportunity to establish essential emotional habits that will be part of our lives.

La investigación presenta un enfoque comparativo, cuantitativo de corte transversal por medio del Inventario de Cociente Emocional EQi-YV BarOn. Participaron 60 niños, niñas y adolescentes (56% mujeres, 44% hombres) entre 7 a 17 años (M=11 años; DT= 3.18), de los cuales, 30 de ellos pertenecen a un hogar de acogida y el resto a una institución privada de la ciudad de Quito, Ecuador. Se encuentran diferencias significativas puesto que los niños, niñas y adolescentes institucionalizados presentan niveles bajos y promedio de inteligencia emocional, a comparación de los que no están bajo acogimiento institucional, que en su mayoría presentan niveles elevados de inteligencia emocional. En conclusión las lecciones emocionales que se aprendan durante la niñez y adolescencia, se vuelven ventanas críticas de oportunidad para fijar hábitos emocionales esenciales que formarán parte de la vida.O objetivo da pesquisa foi comparar os níveis de inteligência emocional em uma amostra de crianças e adolescentes institucionalizados e não institucionalizados em Quito, Equador. A pesquisa adota uma abordagem comparativa e quantitativa, com um desenho transversal usando o Inventário de Quociente Emocional EQi-YV BarOn. Participaram 60 crianças e adolescentes (56% mulheres, 44% homens) com idades entre 7 e 17 anos (Média = 11 anos; DP = 3,18), sendo 30 deles provenientes de um lar de acolhimento e o restante de uma instituição privada na cidade de Quito, Equador. Encontram-se diferenças significativas, uma vez que as crianças e adolescentes institucionalizados apresentam níveis mais baixos e médios de inteligência emocional, em comparação com aqueles que não estão sob acolhimento institucional, a maioria dos quais tem níveis elevados de inteligência emocional. Em conclusão, as lições emocionais aprendidas durante a infância e adolescência tornam-se janelas críticas de oportunidade para estabelecer hábitos emocionais essenciais que farão parte de nossas vidas.
