La actitud ambivalente del fundador de la psicología individual fue causada, muy probablemente, por su fracaso para conseguir el permiso oficial para dictar clases en la Universidad de Viena, y se fortaleció por las actitudes decididamente antiacadémicas de algunos de sus seguidores.
