description This article analyzes the main trends in audience research studies published in scientific journals on communication from Argentina (2016-2020). Following the meta-research tradition, we made content analysis. The corpus consists of a total of 51 articles. The main results demonstrate the prevalence of inductive and empirical studies, and a preference for studying audiences in relation to digital consumptions in young age groups. We also observed signs of fragmentation and dispersion in the methodological aspects. Most articles were written in South America by unique signatories. The main challenge has audience studies is the need to work on conceptualization, to be able to reflect from a critical and contextual perspective, to advance the study of invisible generational groups, and to re-examine the place of traditional media. It is urgent to rethink audiences in a context of strong media concentration where the power between mass media and audience is as disproportionate as it is unequal. Between inequality and power, we can find the reason for study audiences.

Siguiendo la tradición de la metainvestigación, se realiza un análisis de contenido. El corpus está conformado por un total 51 artículos. Los principales resultados demuestran que predominan los estudios inductivos y empíricos, con preferencia a estudiar las audiencias en relación con lo digital en grupos etarios jóvenes. Se observa una fragmentación y dispersión en lo conceptual y metodológico. Los artículos provienen mayoritariamente de América del Sur con firmantes únicos. Los principales desafíos que tienen hoy los estudios de las audiencias son la necesidad de trabajar en la conceptualización, reflexionar desde una mirada crítica y contextual, avanzar en estudiar a grupos generacionales invisibilizados y volver a preguntarse por el lugar que ocupan los medios tradicionales. Urge repensar a las audiencias en un contexto de fuerte concentración mediática en el que los poderes entre emisor y receptor son tan desproporcionados como desiguales. Seguindo a tradição da metapesquisa, é realizada uma análise de conteúdo. O corpus é composto por um total de 51 artigos. Os principais resultados demonstram que predominam estudos indutivos e empíricos com preferência ao estudo de audiências em relação ao digital em faixas etárias jovens. Observa-se uma fragmentação e dispersão conceitual e metodologicamente. Os artigos vêm principalmente da América do Sul com signatários únicos. O principal desafio que os estudos de audiência têm hoje é a necessidade de trabalhar a conceptualização, de poder refletir desde uma perspectiva crítica e contextual, de avançar no estudo dos grupos geracionais invisíveis e de nos questionarmos novamente sobre o lugar que os meios de comunicação tradicionais ocupam. É urgente repensar as audiências num contexto de forte concentração mediática onde os poderes entre emissor e receptor são tão desproporcionais quanto desiguais.
