However, many academics seem confused on the nature of the thesis itself. In this paper, firstly, I contrast contribution to knowledge with student learning and qualification of competences; secondly, I review reasonable demands for each degree level; thirdly, show why present theses still conform to a bureaucratic and encyclopedic style which slows the process of conversion into a scientific article; finally, I discuss the role of the supervisor, and point out some of the risks of authoritarianism due to topic selection and acceptability.La nueva Ley Universitaria peruana fija como requisito alternativo para la obtención del título profesional la elaboración de una tesis, y como obligatorio respecto a los grados de maestro y doctor. Sin embargo, la comunidad académica luce desorientada respecto a la naturaleza de las tesis. En este ensayo, distingo entre sus objetivos de contribución al conocimiento versus el aprendizaje del alumno y certificación de competencias, identifico las demandas razonables para cada nivel académico, explico por qué las tesis que siguen el formato burocrático-enciclopédico imperante deben dejar paso al del artículo científico, comento el rol del asesor, y advierto sobre los riesgos autoritarios del señalamiento de temas o tipos de tesis aceptables.
