description The generation of scientific production (SP) requires a personal and institutional motivational culture. Objective. To determine the factors related to SP made by teachers of a School of Medicine. Methods. The design was descriptive, prospective and transversal. The sample consisted of 65 teachers and it was collected in November 2014. They were surveyed with informed consent. The data was collected in a questionnaire. Results. 65 (100 %) teachers were included, average age 47 + - 8 years (range: 33-62). There were 60 (92.3 %) males. 98.5 %(64) consider that communication of research results is important, and 6.1 % publish in indexed journals. Teachers aged 30-49 years (80 %) performed the highest number of publications compared to those who were 50 years of ageor older (20 %) (OR = 5.0, 95 % CI: 1.4-17.3; p < 0.011). The main motivational factors with SP were: the increase in professional academic quality [44.6 % (29)], the generation of new knowledge [43.1 % (28)] and the achievement of personal satisfaction [7.7 % (5)]. The demotivational factors were: lack of time available [49.2 % (32)], ignorance of the scientific research methodology [13.6 % (9)] and lack of economic support [12.3 % (8)]. Conclusions. The main factor related to SP was having an age under 50, and the most frequent were motivational factors were to generate new knowledge and increase the professional academic quality.

La muestra, compuesta por 65 docentes universitarios, quienes fueron encuestados previo consentimiento informado, se obtuvo en noviembre del 2014. Los datos se recolectaron en cuestionario. Resultados. Se incluyeron 65 (100 %) docentes, con un promedio de edad de 47 +- 8 años (rango: 33-62). Hubo 60 (92,3 %) varones. El 98,5 % (64) consideraron que es importante la comunicación de los resultados de investigación y el 6,1 % publican en revistas indexadas. Los docentes entre 30 a 49 años (80 %) realizaron la mayor cantidad de publicación en comparación a quienes tenían 50 años de edad o más (20 %) (OR = 5,0; IC 95 %: 1,4- 17,3; p < 0,011). Los principales factores motivacionales con la producción científica fueron: el incremento de la calidad académica profesional [44,6 % (29)], la  generación de nuevos conocimientos [43,1 % (28)] y el logro de una satisfacción personal [7,7 % (5)]. Los factores desmotivacionales fueron: falta de tiempo disponible del docente [49,2 % (32)], desconocimiento de la metodología de investigación científica [13,6 % (9)] y falta de apoyo económico [12,3 % (8)]. Conclusión. El principal factor relacionado con la producción científica fue el tener una edad menor a 50 años y los factores motivacionales más frecuentes fueron: el incremento de la calidad académica profesional y la generación de nuevos conocimientos.Objetivo. A amostra, composta de 65 professores universitários, que foram pesquisados após consentimento informado, foi obtida em novembro de 2014. Os dados foram coletados por meio de um questionário. Resultados. Foram incluídos 65 (100%) professores, com uma média de idade de 47 +- 8 anos (variação: 33-62). Havia 60 (92,3 %) homens. 98,5% (64) consideraram importante a comunicação dos resultados da pesquisa e 6,1% foram publicados em periódicos indexados. Professores com 30-49 anos (80%) publicaram mais do que aqueles com 50 anos ou mais (20%) (OR = 5,0; 95% CI: 1,4- 17,3; p < 0,011). Os principais fatores motivacionais para a produção científica foram: aumentar a qualidade acadêmica profissional [44,6% (29)], gerar novos conhecimentos [43,1% (28)] e alcançar satisfação pessoal [7,7% (5)]. Os fatores desmotivadores foram: falta de tempo disponível do professor [49,2% (32)], falta de conhecimento da metodologia de pesquisa científica [13,6% (9)] e falta de apoio financeiro [12,3% (8)]. Conclusão.
