Descripción
Sumario:Currently, cases of severe infection in the newborn are occasional. Omphalitis is an infection of the umbilicus and surrounding tissues; it traditionally presents with erythema, induration, foul odor and hypersensitivity of the periumbilicalskin associated or not with purulent exudate. We report the case of a 20-dayold newborn who presented to the emergency department with neonatal sepsis, fnger abscess, periorbital cellulitis and umbilical hernia. We describe the onset of the clinical picture, evolution and treatment. Thus, the quality of life of neonatesdepends, to a large extent, on the health care provided to them. Although omphalitis has a favorable progression, cases complicated with necrotizing fasciitis, myonecrosis or systemic disease can lead to high morbidity and mortality
