It is estimated that 80% of alpacas and almost all llamas are in the possession of small owners, basically organized in peasant communities that have livestock as the main source of their economy.Empecemos indicando dos hechos de trascendental importancia: primero, que el Perú es un país privilegiado porque tiene el mayor volumen de los camélidos domésticos sudamericanos, pues posee 2'450,000 alpacas y 1'200,000 llamas, que representan el 90o/o y 30o/o del volumen mundial de estas especies, respectivamente.
