This study researches the views of two important local Arequipa journals: «El Deber» and «El Derecho». The first rejected divorce, strongly defending the indissolubility of marriage; the second supported the promotion and establishment of divorce in Peru. This study shows the vibrant intellectual production in Arequipa during the first decades of the twentieth century, expressed through the press, as well as it's strong involvement in nationwide issues.La propuesta de introducir el divorcio en las primeras décadas del siglo XX en el Perú generó fuertes debates debido a que se afectaba profundamente a la familia y la sociedad. En este contexto, dos grupos tradicionalmente enfrentados sobresalieron: liberales y conservadores. La ciudad de Arequipa participó activamente en la discusión. El presente trabajo busca dar a conocer la postura de dos importantes periódicos de la ciudad del Misti: «El Deber» y «El Derecho». En el caso del primero, representando una defensa acérrima de la naturaleza indisoluble del matrimonio; y en cuanto al segundo, asumiendo la promoción e implantación del divorcio en el país.
