One aspect of the development of the sierra and, indeed, an indicator of its current crisis, has to do with rural-urban migration from the small towns and mountain communities to the coast, especially to Lima.Actualmente, varios aspectos políticos y económicos de la crisis económica por la que atraviesa el Perú han conducido a un nuevo enfoque por el que se ve a al asierra como posible lugar para un nuevo desarrollo. Este tema se basa, en gran medida, en un análisis incompleto sobre la naturaleza de la economía y la sociedad serranas, pese a que recientemente se han realizado muchos trabajos valiosos en las esferas de la sociología, la antropología y la economía.
