This institution was formed by the descendants of the Incan panacas (noble families), which were integrated within Indian parishes of the city. This study presents historical information about the origins of this institution, its importance in determining who was qualified for being considered as an Inca noble and to use the symbols, responsibilities and privileges of the aforementioned aristocracy. The article also shows the mechanisms by which the Incan nobility granted and received legitimacy from the Spanish Monarchical system. El presente artículo ofrece una visión general del Cabildo de los Veinticuatro Electores, entidad virreinal encargada de elegir al alférez real inca que debía participar en la fiesta anual en honra del Apóstol Santiago en la ciudad del Cusco. Esta institución estaba integrada por los descendientes de las panacas incaicas, vinculadas a parroquias de indios de la ciudad. El presente estudio nos informa sobre los orígenes de esta institución, la importancia que adquirió para determinar quién debía ser considerado digno del linaje incaico y el uso de sus símbolos, prerrogativas y privilegios. La investigación muestra también los mecanismos con los que la nobleza incaica otorgaba y recibía legitimación del sistema monárquico hispánico.
