Mistreated by relatives, he became attached to the Indians. Until the age of nine, he practically spoke Spanish to us. Then, picked up by his father, he walked with him through more than twenty towns until, in 1931, he entered the Faculty of Letters of the University of San Marcos. His first short stories are autobiographical in nature, describing the towns in the Peruvian highlands where he spent his childhood. His interest in the Quechua people is also manifested in his later works on ethnology and in the mature period of his literary creation.José María Arguedas nació en Andahuaylas, departamento de Apurímac, en 1911, de madre mestiza y padre blanco. Su madre murió cuando él tenía tres años. El padre ejercía la profesión de abogado en varias provincias. Durante un período el chico vivió con su madrastra y después se escapó a la hacienda de un tío. Maltratado por los familiares se apegó a los indios. Hasta los nueve años nos habló prácticamente el castellano. Luego, recogido por el padre, anduvo con él por más de veinte pueblos hasta que, en 1931, ingresó a la Facultad de Letras de la Universidad de San Marcos. Sus primeros cuento son de carácter autobiográfico, describen los pueblos de la sierra peruana en donde pasó su infancia.
