The author shows how in Tlayacapan, the town where he carried out his extensive field research, popular Catholicism is an integral part of the most practical and intimate aspects of the daily life of the inhabitants.El trabajo de John Ingham aporta una nueva perspectiva a los varios estudios sobre sincretismo religioso y sobre el llamado catolicismo "folk" o "popular" en América Latina. A través de una moderna aproximación semiótica-estructuralista, Ingham demuestra cómo los símbolos, temas y patrones del catolicismo medieval español han penetrado y arraigado en las esferas públicas y privadas de los que se ha llegado a llamar "cultura tradicional" en México central.
