The main direct cause of death was constituted, infection (34%), mainly due to septic abortion and endometritis, toxemia (22%) and hemorrhage (16%), indirect causes TB, heart disease, pulmonary embolism, mole and choriocarcinoma , totaling 22%.Se evaluó 205 casos de muerte materna ocurridas en el Hospital Maternidad de Lima en el último quinquenio 1980-1984, lapso en el que hubo 154,131 partos, lo que da una tasa de mortalidad materna de 9.3 por 10,000 nacidos vivos. La muerte ocurrió en el 12% en adolescentes y en el 29% en mujeres mayores de 35 años, en nulíparas 20% y grandes multíparas 34%. La principal causa directa de muerte la constituyeron, la infección (34%), principalmente por aborto séptico y endometritis, la toxemia (22%) y la hemorragia (16%), causas indirectas la T. B.
