The physiological rol of the placenta ay high altitude is discussed.Los autores han estudiado los pesos del recién nacido y la placenta en 111 mujeres que viven en Río Pallanga, una ciudad minera situada en 4600 metros de altitud; como control estudiaron 120 mujeres que viven en Lima a 150 metros sobre el nivel del mar. A gran altura 24,3% de los recién nacidos tenían un peso inferior a 2.500 gramos y el valor medio del peso de la placenta fue 557 g. significativamente mayor que a nivel del mar: 500 g. (p <0,005); el cociente de la placenta fue mayor en Río Pallanga que en Lima.
