The knowledge and study of PCOS in women of reproductive age is important because disturbances of menstruation and fertility she usually presents cosmetic problems caused by hyperandrogenism and an increased risk of developing diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease future. Some conclusions of the recent consensus panel ESHRE / ASRM in Rotterdam on PCOS is included in this review.Se hace una revisión sobre el síndrome de ovarios poliquísticos (SOPQ), entidad que comprende varios síntomas y signos, dentro de ellos principalmente alteraciones de la ovulación, hiperandrogenismo y presencia de ovarios poliquísticos. Se hace hincapíé en la diferencia entre el hallazgo de ovarios poliquísticos y el SOPQ. El conocimiento y estudio del SOPQ en la mujer en edad reproductiva es de importancia por las alteraciones de la menstruación y la fertilidad que ella generalmente presenta, los problemas cosméticos derivados por el hiperandrogenismo y por el riesgo aumentado de desarrollar diabetes mellitus o enfermedad coronaria en un futuro.
